The Photograph Collection documents the evolving built environment of the University. Many buildings that were once an integral part of the University are no longer standing. Other buildings have changed uses. Some departments were located in buildings in Downtown Denver.

Buildings from the Past

Carnegie Library and Buchtel Memorial Chapel, 1917
The then-new Carnegie Library and Buchtel Memorial Chapel, 1917. This picture was taken facing north from about where the Mary Reed Building is now. One tower from the Chapel still stands between Margery Reed and Penrose Library.

 

Athletic arena under construction
The old athletics arena was part of a navy drill building which was moved to the University after WWII. The arena was torn down to make way for the Ritchie Center for Sports & Wellness.

 


Changing Uses - Mary Reed Building

Mary Reed Library Renaissance reading room

The Mary Reed Building was originally built as a library. This is the Renaissance reading room, from the late 1950's.

Downtown

Medical and Pharmacy departments in Downtown Denver on Arapahoe St., 1900's
The Medical School and Pharmacy Department, both long defunct, were housed in buildings in Downtown Denver, on Arapahoe Street, as seen in this picture circa 1900-1910.
