Herbert Alonzo Howe (1858-1926) was Professor of Astronomy and Applied
Mathematics, University of Denver, 1880-1925; Dean of the College of Arts
and Sciences, 1892-1926; and Director of the Chamberlin Observatory, 1892-1926.
Professor Howe was Acting Chancellor at the University before Henry A.
Buchtel was appointed in 1900.
Scope and Content
The Herbert Alonzo Howe Collection contains personal correspondence,
scrapbooks, and diaries. The collection also contains correspondence,
documents, and blueprints related to the building of the Chamberlin Observatory
at the University of Denver, and the installation of the Saegmuller 20-inch
telescope with a Clark lens. Observation books contain astronomical observations
made at the Chamberlin Observatory from 1897 through 1925, including Halley's
Comet in 1910. The Collection covers the years 1869 to 1926. An index
and detailed listing of Howe's correpondence is also available. Please

Herbert A. Howe was an internationally known astronomer and mathematician.
He was instrumental in the building of the Chamberlin Observatory and
was essential to the installation of the telescope. Professor Howe was
with the University of Denver from 1880 until his death in 1926. The Collection
includes materials which give insight into the early years of both Denver
and the University of Denver. |
