Visitors - General Borrowing & Lending Policies

Visitors to Penrose Library affiliated with reciprocal borrowing libraries, or who bring a referral card, or who pay for access and borrowing privileges are considered Special Borrowers. The following borrowing and lending policies apply to Special Borrowers.

Borrower responsibilities
The checking-out of any library material from Penrose Library constitutes an agreement by the borrower to abide by the rules and regulations contained in these policies.

Return of materials
Material is due on or before the due date. Books may be placed in the outside return slot or the return slot next to the Circulation Desk. Return receipts are available at the Circulation Desk and are strongly suggested to avoid future confusion regarding book check out status.

Borrowing for others is strongly discouraged. If you give library material checked out to you to someone else and they do not return it, you are liable for overdue fines, replacement charges, and processing fees.

Response to notices
You are required to respond immediately to hold or recall notices. For example, if a book is recalled you must return it by the new due date to avoid overdue fines and other possible charges.

Overdue and replacement charges
Fines for overdue material accrue at the rate of $.50/day/book to a maximum of $15.00. Borrowing is restricted when records show one or more overdue books or $15.00 in fines.
Fines for overdue recalled material accrue at the rate of $1.00/day to a maximum $25.00 fine.

Books are declared "lost" after being overdue 30 days. The lost book charge is as follows:

Juvenile, US Government Documants
$40.00
Art, Folios, Oversized
$115.00
Browsing, Humanities, Social Sciences
$110.00
Sciences/Technology/Medical
$110.00

A $15.00 nonrefundable processing fee is included in the book charge. Lost books that are returned carry a 15.00 overdue fine. Fines and fees apply to all borrowers.

Traces/Holds
If you are unable to locate a book in Penrose you can request a "trace." We will search for the book and notify you of our search results.

Loan periods
Loan periods are three (3) weeks; maximum of six (6) books can be checked out at a time.

Renewals
All materials may be renewed. Special borrowers have a limit of two renewals. The telephone number for renewals is 303 871-3707. The renewal e-mail address is renew@du.edu.
